What I Think About Thinx Period Panties

Hello, fellow period havers!

not your usual period panties.

Are these period panties worth keeping in your product rotation?

Over the past few years a lot of new innovative ways to try to deal with that pesky monthly visitor has hit shelves from cups, disks, all natural products, and then period panties (not the period panties we’ve known and referenced for years that sit in the back of the drawer until it’s that time). These panties allow you to free bleed without worrying about causing a mess, feeling that uncomfortable feeling of something being stuck inside of you, not feeling weird when you cough or sneeze, or dealing with the thickness of a pad.

I had been considering a pair of period panties for a while due to being tired of leaking through many other products or just wanting to try free bleeding to find out if the benefits were true (less cramping, lighter flow, shorter periods). As a “cyster” (PCOS), heavy bleeding has haunted me since puberty - which can be pretty embarrassing, frustrating, and quite painful to say the least. I finally gave in this summer and ordered some pairs for pick-up at Target. Now, if you haven’t heard of Thinx period panties, the original is sold online at SheThinx.com, but they made a more affordable line in-store at Target called Thinx For All. The only difference is supposed to be that there are less options in choices of colors/designs than the regular collection online. So, with that said, I figured it should suffice as a proper introduction to the product before deciding on paying more dollars for more options down the road. I think I spent a whopping total of $17 (each) in comparison to $39 (lowest starting price) for the same absorbency online. I purchased three pair, one gray and two black, at the highest absorbency (super) - cause ain’t shit light over here.

Anyways, let’s get to it!

Do They Run True To Size?

Thankfully, yes. I ordered my usual size L and they fit great. I would say they also fit kind of snug around the waist band, which was actually great. It offered some tummy control and kind of felt like a slight compressive snug feel against my cramps. Mind you, the style available is mainly the normal full coverage bikini panties, no different styles/cuts in the Thinx For All. The crotch part also runs about as much as an overnight pad does so it gives you pretty good coverage front to back.

How Much Does It Hold?

The super absorbency claims that it is supposed to be able to hold up to 4 or 5 tampons worth of fluid. Keep in mind, that’s give or take on how your period flow is. So you may be able to wear the panties all day or barely make it through 8 hours. I put it to the test on my heaviest day at home first then tried them out at work (12 hours or more including travel). I was able to make it through the night in them, but could not wear them through a 12-hour shift without having a leak. I would suggest you really understand your cycle before busting out into public for a long day with these if you’re like me and have very heavy flows. I also gave it my last test by wearing it out on a night of drinking and I definitely ended up having a leak by the end of the night before heading home.

Does It Feel Wet/Does It Have A Smell?

There’s a moisture wicking fabric above the padded area that kind of prevents this. If you have a clot or anything, it’ll obviously kind of sit on top of it. You can wipe it off with a toilet tissue when you go to the bathroom and continue as normal. It didn’t really feel weird pulling them back up after a pee break. I never felt like I was pulling back on wet panties or anything. As far as a smell, I - personally - do not have a strong odor with my flow, but I think even with slight hints of any odor, I couldn’t smell anything even with the stagnant blood. I would not know how it would work with some of the girlies who may have stronger odors. Why I also suggest testing it out at home first so you’re aware of all of the ins and outs of the panties when it comes to your own body and flow.

How Do You Clean Them?

I think we always heard to soak our period panties in some cold water and wash them. It’s about the same concept with these. I usually wash them in the shower with soap and water at the end of the day until the water runs clear (if you are not comfortable with all facets of your body and its functions then this is not the product for you). I would let it air dry after that. Doing this would clean them enough to rotate through the pairs if you have a limited amount. You are also welcome to wash them in the washer in cold water, but make sure to let them air dry after instead of throwing them into the dryer. This is how I clean them at the end of my cycle or use of them. It is said that they are good for up to 40 washes or about 2 years if taken care of properly.

In Conclusion…

I would say I’m still learning how to operate with Thinx, but I cannot fully recommend the panties for anybody who is used to leaks with products. I’d only recommend for lighter days or as backup with another product like a cup or tampon for added security. I also think it’s great to use in-house when you don’t want to fuss with products while relaxing and just want to feel free for a change. I cannot say that Thinx are great or terrible, it has its place in period protection, but as a heavy bleeder, I cannot say I’ve found them to be a saving grace.

At the end of the day, it wouldn’t hurt to try out for yourself, but don’t get your hopes up with this product. If you do try them and you have success with the product, how does it feel to be Period God’s favorite?
